Remembering Fiddler Dougie MacDonald

It is with great sadness that we pass along the news of Dougie MacDonald's death.

Dougie died on December 26, 2009 when his vehicle went off the road outside of Cheticamp.  He was returning home after playing at the Doreyman with Robbie Fraser and others.

In his youth, Dougie was a fixture at the Glendale concerts with his extended family which included his father Francis, Uncle Donnie Dougall, cousins Howie, Jeff, Sandy, Johnny, Harvey and many others.  The MacDonalds have always been generous with their music and Dougie was no different.

Dougie composed about 150 tunes and recorded 4 professional recordings (A Miner, Cape Breton Times, Staying In Tune and Fiddle Tunes) during his short life and appeared on a number of other recordings including one produced for the University of Cork in the early 1990's.

He was a good friend of Jerry Holland's and the two performed together on a number of occasions including this set at The Red Shoe in October 2008.

The Members of the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association extend our sympathy to his wife Laureen, son Liam and the extended family.
